Jockeys permissions to ride in specific provinces??
1 month 3 weeks ago
I was wondering if certain jockeys are locked into a certain provinces? Or is it a choice of the jockey not to travel?
Just curious

They can travel wherever they like but economics prevent them from doing so ...If a rider is offered 2 crap rides out of province he won't take them...Apprentices however are guided by the academy...they are based in certain provinces and only if the riding master deems it fit to travel then they will take those rides....however every few months there are apprentice races in Gauteng and the kids travel to compete....sometimes it's not worth the bother as the riding fees don't cover airfare....there have been occasions where little know jocks have traveled because a big stable needs them...I recall Snaith flew Ramzan down to Durbanville to win aboard Mucho Dinero in the Woolavington because he needed a 50kg rider...also in PE many of the local jocks ride all the work for the big yards so traveling is out as they are part of the team to prep for the strike jocks

There used to be Provincial jockey challenges in the past and it was a great day to be at the course to see the visiting out of province jockeys in action.
These days it's become a challenge itself to determine whether Zackey for example is KZN or Gauteng based.
Seeing the same jockeys all over the country almost every day of the week is really tedious ,I speak for myself of course.
