The Oaks looks very thin this year with only 11 horses in the first nominations and only 2 horses rated in the 90's, being Sweet Theresa (96) and Golden Scold (92). Both these horses have yet to go anywhere near the Oaks trip. Hab Acht with a 67 rating has been nominated, which shows there is good money to be made with decent staying fillies.

The Oaks field seems poor - are there no quality staying fillies around? Seems a few okes from KZN missed the boat here.

She’s On Fire and Spring Garland have been added to the field for the Champions Challenge to be run over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday 25 April.

The R2 million race is one of eight Graded races to be run on Champions Day at Turffontein. The two other Grade 1 races are the R1.5 million SA Derby and the R1 million Computaform Sprint over 1000m.

Also run on the day are the SA Oaks over 2450m, the Gold Bowl over 2850m, the Nursery and Fillies Nursery over 1160m, and the Camellia Stakes over 1160m, all Grade 2 races.

The two mares fought out a thrilling finish in the Gerald Rosenberg Stakes over the course and distance with Spring Garland getting the better of She’s On Fire in the dying strides.

Meanwhile Champions Cup winner Buy And Sell, Steinhoff Summer Cup champion Rudra and HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Smart Banker have been allotted top weight of 58kg for the Champions Challenge.

On merit rating that puts Buy And Sell in the best position of all as he is rated 111 with Smart Banker at 110 and Rudra 1t 108. Sean Tarry’s runner, at No 9, also has the best draw of the three. Smart Banker is currently at No 13 with Rudra at No 23.

However, as only 18 horses can run, all their positions should improve when the final field is announced on Thursday.

Dingaans and Gauteng Guineas winner Oracy has been allotted just 54kg and is drawn at No 12. The New Zealand-bred colt is unbeaten in four starts and has not been heavily penalised as he has not won a Grade race.

See The Light and Potchefstroom are the only two supplementary entries for the SA Derby, the third leg of the Triple Crown.

The final field will be announced on Thursday 16 April.
