If you are a believer in the MR system and believe that it works then every horse numbered 7 - 18 are out at the weights with the balance of the field!

Tropicle Empire very close to PP on MR an weights. Drawn 1. Not a very impressive field.
Horses 15 - 19 should never make a July Field.

Sly I was thinking the same thing - Bar a few the field looks very ordinary. One of the suprise for me has to be Cape Town - I would have thought that this horse would need to have won the cup trial to qualify and that for me somes up the strength of this field. Dunford won off a 98 but there has been a bump in MR since

Maybe because Pocket Power is in such a class of his own the field looks week.
The field may lack strength in depth but you've got the current winners of the SA Classic, SA Derby, Cape Derby, Champions Cup, and Champions Challenge to name a few. I'm not saying its a stellar cast but there are plenty graded race wins in this field. It is a handicap of course so you'll always have a few passengers that come for the ride. Maybe the weight spread needs to be looked at in future with the top weight carrying 62 kg with a 12 kg spread from top to bottom.
Pocket Power is racing against the history books rather than the field anyway and I think its a bit of a shame that a horse of this ability has not been tested on the international stage...

Class has been suffering from the dilution factor in many traditional races owing to bigger races elsewhere that siphon off the cream.
In SAF, Dubai sucks the best horses by and large, and you are left with horses in the Durban July that would never had made it into the fray in years past.
In California and New York, the Breeders Cup has sucked off horses that used to make the Santa Anita Handicap and the Woodward Stakes or the Jockey Club Gold Cup the biggest races.
Horses go where the money and prestige are, not necessarily for tradition.

Could the draws be the undoing of the favoured horses???????????? Anton Marcus has switched from Smart Banker to Our Giant. And i for one, fancied Smart banker and not Our Giant
