PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Celebrities coming to Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile
DATE: Monday 26 October 2009
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
“Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius, soapie star Mmabatho Montsho and Comrades Marathon legend Bruce Fordyce are among the famous faces coming to Turffontein Racecourse for the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile on Saturday 7 November, when the participating charities will benefit by a total of R550,000!
The Charity Mile is a glorious event that brings together top racehorses, famous people and corporate sponsors in aid of charity. It’s a normal horserace in every sense, but what’s special is that each runner also races on behalf of a charity and its finishing position determines how much the charity wins.
To add to the excitement each runner has a corporate sponsor and is publicly represented by a celebrity. This year’s event is being sponsored by hospitality and gaming company Peermont and Emperors Palace, a hotel, casino and convention resort and one of 14 properties operated by Peermont.
A total of R550 000 will be given away to the 16 participating charities. The charity of the winning horse gets a massive R100 000 and emotions will run high as the runners drive to the line in the final moments of the race.
Other celebrities coming to Charity Mile are Lebo “Shugasmakx” Mothibe, a South African rapper, actor and entrepreneur best known as the co-founder and star of iconic local hip-hop brand Skwatta Kamp, DJ jazzy D, who has become famous by doing remixes of past and current dance-floor hits, and former WBA and IBF Super Featherweight champion Brian Mitchell.
The full list of celebrities is:
Ferdinand Rabie, Brian Mitchell, Graeme Joffe, Revin John, John Perlman, Neil Andrews, Rodney Berman, Patrick Shai, Darren Simpson, DJjazzyD, Oscar Pistorius, Bruce Fordyce, Werner Muller, Simon Grear, Mmabatho Montsho and Shugasmakx.
The ballot that will determine the horse representing each charity will take place at 64@The Palace this Wednesday 28 October.
Here’s the breakdown of prize money to the charities (should a runner be withdrawn, the relevant charity gets R20 000): 1st - R100,000; 2nd - R70,000; 3rd - R50,000; 4th - R40,000; 5th - R30,000; 6th - R29,000; 7th - R28,000; 8th - R27,000; 9th - R26,000; 10th - R25,000; 11th - R25,000; 12th - R20,000; 13th - R20,000; 14th - R20,000; 15th - R20,000; 16th - R20,000.

The 16 charities that will collectively win R550, 000 at the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein on Saturday 7 November have been announced. They include the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, which banked R100, 000 in the race last year, when its runner Likeithot kept going in a thrilling finish to snatch a famous victory.
Nine of the charities this year comprise the schools sponsored by the Peermont Children’s Trust, which provides social, educational and emotional upliftment to children in disadvantaged areas of the Ekurhuleni Metro Council, primarily through financial support that ensures they receive an improved quality of education and care.
The Peermont Children’s Trust sponsors after-school care sites at nine primary schools in Tembisa, Katlehong, Kwa-Thema and Vosloorus. This project is monitored by the Department of Education and includes a hot meal, assistance with homework, guidance and life skills education. More than 1.4 million learners have been assisted to date.
The nine schools are Welamlambo Primary, Maphanzela Primary, Reahile Primary, Umkhathize Primary, Fortune Kunene Primary, Jongimfundo Primary, Nageng Primary, Thembakazi Primary and Khangezile Primary.
The other seven charities are the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, the Highveld Horse Care Unit, The Trust - an umbrella organisation that donates money to approved member charities - and four of The Trust’s charities in Autism South Africa, the SanWild Wildlife Trust, WMACA (Women & Men Against Child Abuse) and SMYLe (Soweto Marimba Youth League).
Each of the charities will be represented by a runner in the Charity Mile and the amount won by each charity will be determined by the finishing position of its runner.
