You all may be interested to know that I have a nodding acquaintance with Queen Elizabeth II that dates back to the mid 1970s when we both had horses trained by a fellow named William Hastings Bass, who later became Lord Huntingdon. I had a filly in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and my filly was named Queen of Prussia. Apparently the name of the race and the name of the filly were too much for the Queen to resist and she asked Bass if she might obtain my permission to visit the paddock and inspect my filly.
Well, naturally, one does not grant paddock permission at Royal Ascot very lightly; but, seeing as it was the Queen of England, I didn't see the harm in letting the old gal come down for a looksee.
Bass informed me not to get any closer than 60 paces. He said The Queen would look at my direction for my instructions, at which point I was to nod my approval.
As complicated as it was, I pulled off the maneuver without a hitch.
Would love to tell you Queen of Prussia won, but she ran about sixth or seventh as I recall.
I later had a similar run in with Elizaeth Regina when we both visited Nureyev the stallion as he was in transit from France to the U. S. via Britain.
So as you can plainly see, the Queen and I go way back.
