yikes Mr Lips.....I don't think that Bloem and Newmarket were actually mothballed so that they or some other crowd interested in taking on Phumela could now buy them at a bargain basement price and give the operator a real run for their money. Distinct clauses in the sales agreements would prevent any future horse racing from ever taking place at any of these venues. The sale of Arlington also has this clause and no doubt so will Durbanville.

I think a higher tax rate and the cost of transporting so many horses and people to and from Gauteng had a lot to do with it. Unlike Kimberley tosday, which has strong local stables, Bloem virtually became another Joburg meeting, hundreds of miles from Joburg.
Not that I'm suggesting it's feasible or even likely, but how can Phumelela enforce a "no racing" clause if someone bought a former racecourse from whoever it belongs to now? If the Blioem property belongs to (say) Joe Blogs, how can anybody who buys it from Blogs be barred from reopening it as a racecourse? Blogs would have fulfilled his obligation not to use it for racing, but how can that obligation pass onto any subsequent buyer/s?
Is there not some law against monoplies of this sort? In fact, would either P or GC have a leg to stand on legally if somebody wanted to build and open a new racecourse in SA?

True, Mr. Lips the operator can be challenged on such clauses and may soon be, should a party with enough interest decide to plough into such a venture. However it is far less aggivating to develop an entirely new racing centre that has not already been poisoned by the current operators. A city styled venture like that of Sha-Tin would be a better proposition and if the local and state government authoritory with all the nessisary backing be mooted then that would be 1st prize. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, racing needs to be upgraded from within before it can get any further support. The present model is on a downward spiral and the mistakes of the past will continue to haunt us in the present and because of it cannot have a future!!!!!
