Some would say Sangster won one less Derby than he should. Remember El Gran Senor? I'm guessing that he won 3 of the Epsom variety? It is a guess, though.

Some news and stories off the net for the Melbourne Cup:

NIWOT - an impressive winner of today's (Sat 29/10!!) Lexus. Now a winner without a penalty and carrying 51kg. Trained by John Hawkes.

SANGSTER - as mentioned by Scotia, won the Vic Derby (today again!!) after taking an early lead and just managed to hold on.

TULLAMORE - Gai Waterhouse doesn't seem to be overly enthused. ??. Said this week how disappointing it was that the Australian breeders have lost the plot and desire to breed stayers. (Strange. "Is So You Think" Aus bred?).

DUNADEN - 2nd fav; like Americain last year, was an easy winner in the Geelong Cup last month; Delzangles the trainer "Dunaden has beaten Americain every time". (Not sure how many times though.) It seems that the current riding engagements may have to change following a disciplinary to the original jock.

AMERICAIN - fav; brilliant/impressive winner of the Moonee Valley Cup but apparently a little useless in Europe.

JUKEBOX JURY - A European horse unraced in Australia and has better form than Americain. ?? (not exactly sure of what is "better form").

GLASS HARMONIUM - an impressive winner by making every post a winning one in todays (!!) Mackinnon Stakes. He has booked his place in the final field but the connections are not sure about going for it.

E&OE !!

I'll take a wild guess and go for one of Mark Johnston's. Maybe Juke Box Jury, but who knows??

It is true, though, that despite horses like So You Think Australian breeders are becoming more and more speed-oriented. The race every breeder wants to win is the Golden Slipper for 2yos. This might go a bit of the way towards explaining why Galileo was a flop with his Australian runners, at least when compared to his European (and South African) runners.

Francesca Cumani, daughter of British trainer Luca Cumani, is calling for the Melbourne Cup to discontinue its practice of "renting" scantily clad and underdressed celebrities. Oh no :-(

She calls them "fly-in fillies" :-)
