What amazes me is the fact that SA is the worst (regarding the above) in Africa!

Stats would be based on reported cases and convictions I would assume. In the rest of Africa how many cases are reported by the victims and how good are their police and judicial systems?

Crimes per capita is a better measure ... total number of crimes in a country with a population of 250 million is naturally going to be higher than in a country of 50 million.
What the country's laws consider "crimes" also matters.
And so does the rate of reporting of crimes ... in many, shall we say less developed, countries, rape is hardly taken seriously, and for a woman to report it to the police is useless. Here in SA most thefts would never be reported except that insurance claims depend on a case number ... 99% sure you will hear no more about it and as for getting your goods back or seeing the thieves in court, forget it.

Neither is N Korea, or several Muslim countries. Mind you, if the country defines as a crime opposing the ruling party or insulting Mohammed, taking their stats seriously is going to be hard for most westerners. Likewise if they call it a crime for a woman to drive a car, or speak to a man she is not related to.
Australia and New Zealand are also not on the list. Wonder why? Maybe they really have a low crime rate ... I dunno. I do though remember my sister putting on Facebook recently that NZ (she lives there) did not have ONE SINGLE FATALITY OR SERIOUS INJURY ON THEIR ROADS during this past Easter season. And a friend of hers commented that the same applied to Western Australia. Incredible!

In my first six months in South Africa I was robbed 5 times. I bothered reporting it the first time and then realised it was a total waste of time doing so. My partner has had her purse stolen since she went back in February. We had numerous American Peace Corps volunteers stay at our backpackers who had in varying degrees been sexually molested, including rape on a number of occasions, another PCV was stabbed in the back and almost killed, One of the PCVs did a survey and I think it was 84% of them (I believe its about 120 PCVs a year) had been on the receiving end of some kind of crime while in SA. We've found screwdrivers and letter openers left on our premises that would have been used on people's eyes, a girl guest cut by an intruder with a knife, another guest walked in to the kitchen one night to find a guy there with a machete... we used a coded gate, electric fence, dog, panic buttons, security guard etc etc. The list is endless. And I am sorry Titch, imo this is not a world problem it is a South African problem and until people stop thinking it is a world problem and start properly campaigning etc to change things it will only get worse. No disrespect but those crime figures released above are simply masking the grim reality.

Gun crime: Labour 'losing control'
Jan 25 3:03 PM
Labour has been accused of losing control of gun crime as new figures show a sharp rise in armed robberies.
Guns were used in 4,120 robberies last year - a 10% jump - including a 9% rise to 1,439 in the number of street robberies where guns were used.
There was also a rapid and unexplained increase in the number of times householders were confronted in their own homes by armed criminals. Residential firearms robberies show a 46% leap, a record 645 cases in England and Wales - up 204 on the previous year and four times the level recorded in 2000-01.
The figures come a day after two men armed with a replica gun robbed a Home Office worker on his way home after sharing a curry with Home Secretary John Reid. The 29-year-old civil servant was making his way home in Beckenham, Kent, shortly before midnight when he was attacked.
A Met Police spokeswoman said the man's wallet and mobile phone were taken and confirmed that two teenage men remain in custody at a south London police station.
The Home Office report shows that handguns are the most commonly used firearm in robberies, reported in 2,888 cases.
Shadow home secretary David Davis said of the figures: "This shows Labour is losing control of gun crime across the board, whether it be on the street or in innocent people's homes.
"Gun crime is mainly fuelled by gang warfare and drug addiction, which is a consequence of Labour's failing drugs policy. It is exacerbated by our porous borders, which allow illegal weapons to flow into the country."
Home Office minister Tony McNulty said: "Firearm offences have fallen significantly, by 14% in the year up to September 2006, which amounts to 1,642 fewer incidents.
"While there is a small rise in residential firearm robberies, these account for a tiny proportion of recorded offences overall, although we recognise any firearm incident is traumatic for victims." He added: "We have some of the toughest firearm legislation in Europe."
The 2010/11 BCS estimates that there were 2,203,000 violent incidents against adults in
England and Wales.
1
Although there was an apparent six per cent increase compared with
2009/10, estimates for these two years are not statistically significantly different (Table 2.01).
Within the overall category of BCS violence, there have been no statistically significant
changes for the specific offence types of wounding, assault without injury or robbery between
the 2009/10 and 2010/11 BCS (Table 2.01).
There was a 38 per cent increase in the number of incidents of assault with minor injury
compared with the 2009/10 BCS. This was preceded by small fluctuations in recent years and
levels of these incidents are now similar to those seen in 2006/07.

Titch... the whole point is its not about statistics, if you think that SA doesn't have a problem because it is apparently the problem of the world then so be it but I have been in 40 countries in the world and only in Rio did I feel as nervous as I did in SA. Write to a backpackers in England and ask them if they can reel off the same stuff I did earlier. But let us not "argue" as I feel very strongly about this (yes, I know I am English and it is your country but I have had the experiences mentioned and thus feel I have some right to an opinion) and you may feel as strongly the other way... so lets get back to racing

I know that crime in SA is very bad, but I have never been victim of violent crime (Thank God) but 4 youngsters did try to mug me in London. They could not have been older than 15. Just my opinion
