A 45-year-old man - thought to be former Namibian and South African domestic cricketer Louis Vorster - was shot dead in Muldersdrift on Tuesday night, Gauteng police told SAPA.

He was leaving a filling station when a gold Volkswagen with two men inside blocked his way, Tshisikhwawe Ndou, a police spokesperson said.

One of the men walked up to him and fired a shot at him, while the other went to the passenger side of his vehicle and grabbed a bag. They fled.

"He was declared dead at the scene," said Ndou, adding that a murder case had been opened. He could not confirm whether the person who died was Vorster.

News about Vorster's death surfaced on Twitter on Tuesday night.

Vorster made his first class debut in the 1985/86 season and represented Northern Transvaal, North West, Namibia, Matabeleland, Transvaal and the Worcestershire county in England.

His last listed first class match was for Namibia against Easterns in Windhoek in October 2009.

He scored 4 786 first class runs at an average of 33,23, with a highest score of 188.

Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel was stunned when he heard the news. "Tonight I'm crying like a baby! Lost a great friend! Rip Louis Vorster..#anothercrimevictiminSA!!" Morkel tweeted.

Former Proteas spinner Pat Symcox tweeted: "Louis Vorster ex-cricketer gunned down MURDEReD outside Pta!soooo sooo sad.What a nice guy."

Proteas batsman Jacques Rudolph tweeted: "Another senseless murder in SA...RIP Louis Vorster".

South African swimming legend Ryk Neethling said: "A great man's life was violently ended tonight. R.I.P Louis Vorster".

He was a great character. RIP Louis and our prayers are with the family & friends.

Pretoria - The execution-style murder of former Namibian and South African domestic cricketer Louis Vorster, 45, near Pretoria on Tuesday appears to have been a well-planned attack.

Beeld reported that Vorster had stopped at the Total fuel station on the N14 to buy a few things at the shop.

CCTV footage showed how the attackers took up their positions while Vorster was still in the shop, waiting for him to return to his car. When he tried to drive off, a car pulled up behind him and blocked his way.

Three men then surrounded his car. The door on the driver’s side was opened and Vorster was shot three times.

Another man went to the passenger’s side and took a package that was lying on the seat.

The men then quickly got into their Volkswagen Polo and drove off.

Vorster was declared dead at the scene, police said. A murder case has been opened.

Someone who knew Vorster and who was on the scene, apparently told staff at the fuel station that he believed Vorster had a package with diamonds.

Police could not confirm this.

Vorster owned a big game farm in Namibia as well as several fuel stations in Pretoria and was involved in farming and flower and fruit export businesses.
 

Sad to read this. Nobody deserves to depart this earth in the manner in which he has.

He was a very good cricketer and by all accounts even a better human being.

Johannesburg - Seven people - two of them minors - accused of gang raping a Soweto teenager are expected to appear in Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The men and boys, who matched the descriptions of the rapists seen in a video recording of the attack, were arrested in Dobsonville on Tuesday.

The video of the rape of the 17-year-old girl went "viral" on the internet on Wednesday and was one of the main topics trending on the social networking site Twitter.

The girl went missing on three weeks ago and was found in a man's house in Braamfischerville on Wednesday. This man was the eighth person arrested in connection with the crime.

AP reported that the girl apparently has the mental capacity of a 5-year-old.
