London, England I assume OR? No-one is saying it doesn't happen of course it does and sad to hear you were an intended victim, good to hear it was only an attempt. As for myself, I was mugged by a bunch of Brazilian kids in Rio, about 10 of them all with broken bottles, I guessed their ages at about 13 or 14... they went away with the equivalent of R100. My point is that in SA, if you are in the right place, such as a backpackers, the amount of stories you hear of (and often had to deal with) which are crime related in SA is truly astronomical... I only mentioned a few things before but it really is almost endless... a girl coming into the office with her shirt ripped open having been mugged at knife-point by 3 lads right outside our front gate, my partner being followed back from the airport and having a hammer smashed against the car window on the driver's side where she was sitting (fortunately, her dad was sensible enough to have had shatter-proof glass put in), I could go on and on. I shall try not to post again for fear of boring people on what for me, and I am sure for all, is a very important subject.

Agree my friend. There is certain areas you don't dare go. I use to visit the nature reserve in Jonkershoek in Stellenbosch regular a few years back for a hike & braai. until we were told of the dangers lurking around robbing hikers and cyclists etc.....they (criminals) are forcing us to take the law in our own hands. Flippin sickening

When a govt of any country fails to provide it's citizens with the safety and protection to which they are entitled, by doing their best to ensure a well trained, honest and effective police force, crime will flourish. When the punishment seldom seems to fit the crime, crime will flourish.Bring back the cane for violent crime against women and children and the elderly at least, and see how quickly these crimes reduce.
