PATRICK LUNN
12 years 6 months ago
I can recall the Lunn family owning horses in the partnership AJ and JD Lunn I think and the trainer was Les Hammond? One of the first horses I can remember was the son of Olean named Run Free who won the Guineas ar Greyville on an objection years ago.
When Pat Lunn took over the yard he had some very useful sprinters, one was the speedy son of Volcanic named The Barbican who was a start to finish specialist and loved the Greyville track. Then there was another import named En Avant who was also a speed machine.
Along came Model Man and what a champion he turned out to be, although not able to win the July but a gallant 2nd to Bush Telegraph conceding chunks of weight and then touched off in the Mainstay 1800 by Main Man again conceding chunks of weight but reversing positions with July winner Bush Telegraph.
Of course Model Man went on to win the Met and establish himself as a top sire at stud.

Can remember The Barbican had a tendency to shift under pressure and in one feature race Jeff Lloyd on one of uncle Joe Joseph's horse went close to The Barbican as a tactical move and when The Barbican interfered with the horse, was it Red Bishop the objection was upheld and Jeff got the race.

Secret Rites won the Champions Cup at Clairwood beating Seal Ring, First Guard. Not sure if the minor position are in correct order. Empress Club ran in the same race so did Flaming Rock. It was Empress Club race in South Africa. Two weeks later it ran 2nd to Signor Amigo in the Mecury Sprint. Has a 3yo i think it ran 2nd to Circle the Sun in the Greyville 1900 having misse the Daily news in a strategy move. Basil Marcus rode it as a 3yo in the July having come down from Hong Kong. I was 12years then lol.
