This must mean that they have no confidence in the prices that are disseminated!!!

Early betting should stop imo , what's the point if all the value can disappear for a few shillings...

The few local "oddsmakers" use an online rating system and strangle the prices to create the over round.
Bookmaking is almost a lost art!

It makes me laugh to see the current system of claims and what is traded on the racecourse theses days

I remember Som Singh used to lay any amount, any time. That man was a real bookmaker in my eyes not this current bunch of clowns masquerading as bookmakers

I still dont understand the claiming system. Why not just shorten the price of the horse concerned, lengthen the prices of the others and let supply and demand take over? Just like the stock exchange.

This really should be an embarrassment to those who call themselves bookmakers. How do you justify 10k of a horse as a full claim? When I was a younger man in the late 70's and early 80's it was not a problem getting 100k of a horse. 100k in those days must be the equivalent of at least 400k in todays values.

I know that my bookmaker lays far larger amounts to his regular punters. I think the solution is to stay away from the larger chains who are run by accountants not bookmakers and build a relationship with your local guy.

Bob my point stands. Have a relationship with a bookmaker and you will get better amounts laid. I remember being in the betting ring at Gosforth Park and Derrick Flynn and his boys waded into a horse. The bookies were laying 50k/100k all round.

the biggest joke has become interbet whereby you take 10 grand of a horse with them and they shorten it it on the actual interbet site and this then shortens in every bookmakers cubicle in the country...iv taken 10k of a horse on their new laying site at around 10 pm at nite and by 8 am the next day the new price is 30 to 40 percent shorter and the rest of the horses betting stays the same ..for me the interbet site has fcuked up the betting in this country as the decimination shorten horses when a bid is put in NEVERMIND A TRADE DONE ON IT....what I find pathetic is the people who actually governe the bookies let this happen..if you don't lay horses for a minimum of 20 to 30k they should have their licenses taken away ..they lucky that betfair is illegal and thanks to them for pushing to have it illegal as they would be battling now as nobody would need them...

Same happens on betfair and with the bookies in the UK, bookies open up the night before and instead of waiting until the market is strong a few guys will take the early prices, usually for peanuts and then fuck the market up for 99% of the rest of the punters.. having said that, weak betting markets have their advantages aswell

The claim syndicate shows a massive loss over a year. Many of those who claim horses will not take a share in the claim. If every bookmaker in the country was prepared to lay R1000 of the claim it could go up to R50000 comfortably.

I think the only people left in the syndicate are Lance Michael, Sedley Barr, Sepel, Keith Ho and Morris Vee.

So if you bet with another bookmaker give him a call and tell him to take a chop of the claim. A big claim leads to a healthy industry. However you cannot expect those mentioned above to carry the can for the rest.
