Last Man Standing...
9 years 2 months ago
I was thinking about different ways to run our buy in competition to add a bit more 'spice' to our addiction.
How about a comp where one buys a 'ticket' for R100, and using the standard formula we compete.... but there is no winner for the day unless only one person shows a profit. Each entry which finishes in the black gets a ticket into the next weekend meeting and carries his profit over with him.
This continues until only one person has a profit and he then takes the pool.
There are various ways to run this. One being only the persons who were in the black compete the next weekend and the next and the next until one man standing.
Another is that others can buy in the next weekend to boost the pool but those who carried over some stakes will have an advantage . This method will continue boosting the pool.
If there is any sort of interest I will define a set of 'rules' and publish them and we can debate them...
Irrespective of this thread we WILL be running a Champions Day competition

The buy (back) in is the key e.g. would the busted players be allowed to re-enter at a percentage of the original pool, so say the original pool was R 1 500.00, then the buy in is 10% and they re-join on the lowest positive total, because it would be almost impossible to buy back in and start from zero and expect to overhaul the leader who could be sitting on (say) R 4 000.00 plus. Or the buy in doubles on each buy in if the competition was to run over (say) two weekends (Sat/Sun - Sat/Sun). That way a person could buy in three times if he felt the kitty was worth it - just a thought.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

I think this is a great concept; I suggest that 'buying in' into the subsequent rounds might have the effect that we could go on forever without having a single 'winner' ......so I think that having only the 'winners' progress to the next round would be more practical....unless the competition comes to an end when there are '3 man standing' with the pool spilt between them - maybe 60% to the winner, 30% and to the runner-up and the remaining 10% for finishing 3rd

As a former multiple winner of this competitions here is my 5c worth
I suggest that start this competition on the first Saturday of the month buy in R200 everybody with their totals get carried over to next Saturday, next Saturday you shuck in your R200 if you prefer not your balance stays but you can't increase your balance and so we do it for 4 or 5 Saturdays, last Saturday of the month pool is won and divided 70% to winner 20% runner up and 10% 3 rd place
assume 20 people enter every Saturday the pool will be for a 4 Saturday month R16 000, therefore winner will get R11 200.
A person can buy any weekend but his balance will be zero
if you land up with negative the previous week you pay your R200 and you start at zero , if you have a positive balance obviously your balance get carried forward this way no one will start a weekend with a negative
I have friend who are flying pigeons and they are flying for high stakes every weekend.
I think we must also up the ante
here are my suggestion we start a Super pool one Saturday a month,Entry fee R1000 I would suggest the first Saturday after the 30th /31 st of a month It will give you a month time to save up your R1000, and will create interest image we can get to get to 200-300 entries a month?
Prize money divided on same bases 70% ,20% 10%
Once a month you will have a decent pot, we can also use different venues for instances the venue with the highest prize money on their feature race, that will ensure you have decent horses to select.
If we do this you will have someone to do the adnim,, in both cases, suggest small % of entry fee goes towards remuneration for that person.

Hi gents I like things to b with least of complications.I enjoy current way of running current comp for one it is over and done the same day and not drags on.pls remember we all are not availible every weekend to compete cause of family commitments work and so forth.I personally enter these comps for the fun of it and just to stimulate interest for the day.

Maybe we can still have the compo in the original format and then introduce the 'Last Man Standing' as a separate competition ?

A new day a new compo. And what I do propose is to change the R100 bet to a size which is a function of its price and profit. E.g.. if it is a rule that a bet must yield R1000 and the price is 5/10 then the player must bet R2000. Likewise, if the price is 100/1 then the player must bet R10. This mitigates those players unscrupulously betting R100 on big outsiders to just scoop the pool in one punt.

To keep it simple I suggest you use the following formulae to keep everybody happy.....
\ J(x) = Li(x) + \sum_{\rho} Li(x^\rho) - \log 2 + \int_{x}^\infty \frac{dt}{t(t^2 - 1)\log t}
\\pi(x) = \sum_{n = 1}^\infty \frac{\mu(n)}{n} J(\sqrt[n]{x})
\ n! = \int_{0}^{\infty} {x^n e^{-x} \,dx}

\ J(x) = Li(x) + \sum_{\rho} Li(x^\rho) - \log 2 + \int_{x}^\infty \frac{dt}{t(t^2 - 1)\log t}
\\pi(x) = \sum_{n = 1}^\infty \frac{\mu(n)}{n} J(\sqrt[n]{x})
\ n! = \int_{0}^{\infty} {x^n e^{-x} \,dx}

@Magi...just run the comp the way you want it...sounds great! The ones smart enough will realise that,otherwise u will have 50 different opinions.
@JB...I never follow these comps,but every time you respond on a thread we are reminded of HOW great of a champ you are
I would just like to say congrats.Coz it doesn't seem like these guys give a shit,lol.
In punting: 1 is only as good as his last punt!
GOOOOO JB GOOOO ya champ

Thanks all for the input.... I will cogitate over the suggestions and then publish (on this thread) a "Last Man Standing" competition set of rules...and we can fine tune them over next week and make a final call.
That said, there will not be much deviation from what I publish {swishes baseball bat to emphasise point}
@JB ... I do not want to go the 'super pool' route. Most of the guys here punt for recreation and this comp must be affordable and FUN....not STRESS.. but I appreciate your input.

Highlighted above, formula incorrect... that will give you a compound fraction..and the following executables will be invalid ...just saying !!
