One has to be wary in Gauteng at the moment, a lot of the form horses aren't at their best and match fitness is a big asset as some of the results in the last 10 days have shown.

Race 8:

#6 MAGICAL FLIGHT hadn’t won for a long time before finally adding to her tally last week. She’d worked her way nicely down the ratings and was always in control of that race. She rises in class here and goes back up 5 points in the ratings, but she comes in with bottom weight. Her natural pace is a great asset on this course and 1600m looks her ideal trip. She should be able to lead or have one to track and her match fitness is a big advantage against a field where four of the six runners lack a recent run. She has a lot in her favour and she’s my main play on this card.

#5 PATON’S TEARS is the other fit runner in the field, but she’s battling to get into the race before it’s already been won. Her tendency to jump slowly is costing her and with the tracks running so quick still, she is going to have a hard task chasing down a resolute front-runner who won’t be stopping with just 52kgs on her back.

Lack of match fitness has caught out many form runners in Gauteng in the last few weeks, so I’m prepared to take the top weights on as they are giving fitness and weight away to the selection.

It ran in a Merit Rated 76 handicap because it was getting 8.5kgs weight allowance. Its rating was 92. It went up by 8 points.

Being a plate race, on ratings, Rock The Fox, has every runner under sufferance.
