....for those that work on ratings and and times etc......have you ever thought what is the average weight the horse actually carries on its back during morning exercises and workouts....any guesses....:huh: :huh: .

My guess will be around 55kg.

... one may get a young apple to pitch in your ring and offer to work some for you but he is closer to 55kg in his jeans work boots and body protection......your rather older well oiled training saddles with sweat blanket and addional padding is now close to 10kg....so he us helping to bring the average down.....however most workriders are way above 60kg and your big footed grooms in overalls and gum boots are pushing the average closer to 70kg....:ohmy:

Interesting - always wondered how trainers / assistants compare the various work-outs -I assume they are actually aware the weight difference when comparing Horse A to Horse B - would assume that the 'on-lookers' are mostly in the dark about that - might be one of the reasons why a 'morning glory' comes unstuck in a race

... exactly... pairing work partners at similar conditions is an art.. but better still when a top jock volenteers his sevices to give your in form goodie a blowout while his agent is hounding you for the ride ....and your mafuta groom gumboots and all is on your untried newcomer pacing off its arse and keeping up with a 10kg swing..... you the so called kak unrated trainer knows exactly when your next big payday is coming.. :whistle:

....and then again some may not know....was at Newmarket early morning finishing up 1st string...when a rather enthusiastic Rhodesian ex jock now trainer was given a string of pretty decent horses owned by a then Rhodesian multi millionaire..,.he elbowed my Dad and pushed him to the inside fence rail and said come watch my Benoni Diamond Guineas colt work.....out of the dark comes this aslmost black beast of a horse piloted by the Godfather himself ... but close behind him an equally dark leggy but scopey filly with a big gum boot wearing oaff on her back..... what do you think of that.....who's the companion says my Dad.... Agh some 2yr old......2 weeks later Gosforth Park Guineas day...clutching my computaform see that the newbie trainer has 2 runners for the day.....one is the colt in the big one....and a filly in the 2nd.....go down to the parade ring and see it's the dark Bay work companion...check the tote board and see 2 duck eggs.....go to the tote window put R5 ew and swingers with a few in single digits... she skates in by 5 lenghts and pays R102/win.....the colt runs unplaced in the main race... she is the only winner he ever trained.....lost his job..... and still saw him around Sunninghill up until Covid... still crying into his beer... f@ck I still feel sorry for him.....but the game is not for okes that can't or won't pay attention....:blink:

.. out of respect to his family I cannot ..as my wife is still matey with one of his daughters and he always told her what an arsehole my grandfather was... but he was an equally kak jock aswell.... became a total piss cat... and maybe that was his problem from the very start...:S
