....this was in the mid 70s... I was still a teenage schoolboy filling in for absentee grooms and riding horses to the track during school holidays and was paid 50cents a week....so those bets I had were my life savings at the time.... as kids we were at that time never allowed on the course on race days.... but at Germiston trainers got cars onto the track with us youngsters on the back seat.....once inside we could do what ever we wanted....;)

. ... I must add that what my Dad paid me was not my only income.... my maternal grandfather paid me 4 times more for the stable graft.....:P

I reckon I could have a good stab at the trainer..... just the 'Godfather' jock throwing me a bit... first instinct was Raymond Rhodes ... will cogitate this a bit... nice story Muhti

... .yes Roy Curling was known as "the Godfather" and was highly respected by many in the day.. he was one of the very few senior jocks to be at track for work on the 1st strings both he and Raymond Rhodes both rode for my Grandfather ....Roy Curling was the absolute best at feel and feed back in both work and race riding.. in the mornings he was like a ghost you never saw him arrive and he mostly disappeared before the sun was up....but he could have been off to fill full engagements at other training center's...

Your Dad was a real schroodie. When he lined something up, I’m sure he lied to himself😎.
Had that double at the Vaal. Jackpot paid R70k
Michael Cave rode a winner for us, around one Christmas, at 20/1

....but not as shrewd as his dad.. that JP my Dad lined up only had 4 winning tickets 2 were for him and the owner of the shorter 1st leg winner....the other 2 tickets was Pat Shaw and his connections in the Van Biljeon stable that won the last leg...the 2nd leg won for my Dad @20/1 a1st timer over ground ...and was the horse he went to the Dingaans with.....I was in the Army in PTA and my almost straight line JP for R6 bankerxbankerx3 horsesx2 horses R1 unit at the time.....in the last I have the fave and a 5year old mare named Yamulke which fights ir out with Ernie Van Biljoens China way.....if she gets up I then have 1 of 3 winning tickets....:S

Yeah agree with Muhti on Curling...I followed him relentlessly...I recall him winning a few races for Meyer Sheftz which made me some good Tom in those days... Sheftz had that good horse Two Cities if im not mistaken ..but don't think Curling ever road him?

.....Meyer Sheftz was very matey with my Grandad.... and came around to the stables most Sundays.....the best horse he had was a horse called Glad Hand that had a foot problem and required corrective shoeing.....Roy Curling must have rode that one....::unsure:

....what I was attempting to illustrate with this post is that there are not really kak unrated trainers and these so called battlers with small strings can really graft and give more attention to the few in their care.....larger yards more often overlook some things that can not be that noticable and may need a little more attention but could be easily correctable to get better performance..... and as for some that think that the unrated jocks not getting rides are also battling but many of them work harder than most the top okes..... they ride most the work and get jocked off for the title chasers.. but some of these okes have much bigger houses and better cars... as they know what can or can't feature and it is this info that finds its way to crafty punters and independent bookies that pass out those brown bags...

That's very true Muhti and exactly why the man on the street punter is giving up.
The form book means nothing if you not in the know with some of these big priced winners.
