This same senior jock who has no respect for youngsters and is thought to have no concern for other jocks can be seen covering young Trent Mayhew with his mount Jury's Out when the young appie was completely vulnerable and could not move off the course....he waited until medical personnel were on the way before taking his horse to the start.....he reacted badly to a dangerous ride by Gates and for that he must do his time but so must Gates ...and if I were Gates I would go back and look at all the transgressions accumulated over the past few years and change my riding style ....

What about not riding the horse to gain the best possible finishing position?
Too interested in hitting Jason Gates instead of trying to finish in the places therefore comprising the punters money.
Should add an additional ban to one he is gonna get.

I don't have a dog in the fight however I am sure there is going to be evidence presented of multiple infractions in the lead up to that reaction. While i cannot agree with the action we also need to keep in mind that Gates would have been wearing protective gear and the actual physical damage could have been minimal.

There are daily reckless riding examples that the NHA do nothing about, maybe it is because of this in-action that frustrations are starting to boil over. Daily we see riding infractions where jockeys dive for position on a horse and endanger other jocks or take the other horse out of the race completely and nothing is done about it.

When we watch racing in Australia, the UK and most importantly Hong Kong we do not see the amount of reckless riding incidents as we do locally. If the governing body does nothing about dangerous riding then jockeys will get frustrated considering the implications of a fall.

I thought there was a rule that a jockey had to keep their mount on a straight path for a certain distance out of the gates? Maybe other more knowledgeable Clanners can shed some light on this.

Painful to watch the race at 0.4 speed with Nico's commentary...but I did...

3 jumps from one of the outside gates...gets to 2nd ...no interference with the 5 which is placed on the outside of 3rd...

In the straight, 5 comes up to the outside of the 3...Gates starts to push at his mount...whip in his right hand and he changes to his left about 400m out...think the 3 and 5 bump about 300m out...Gates hits his mount once or twice (maybe to straighten it) and  then Lerena has 2-3 wild swings at him hitting him with his whip...Gates continues to ride the 3 into 4th place whilst Lerena stops riding the 5...

What am I missing? please enlighten me...many thanks...

Hearing unconfirmed reports that gavin is getting 7 days suspension and told not to do it again , we await the outcome with keen interest 

A precedent needs to be set.
Needs to be given 6 months minimum.

If normal rules are not enforced, this is what you will get...I blame the lack of consistent application of the laws regarding jockeys keeping their mounts in a straight line, deliberate intimidation of horses/jockeys and dangerous riding. 
IMO the head-on replay shows the retaliation and not the initial incident. JG intimidated ,if not struck Gimme a Storm. (Potentially more dangerous than striking a jockey wearing a skullcap/helmet with body armour) GL retaliated, and lost his crop, too... But more importantly failed to ensure that his mount obtained the best possible place/finish.
We no longer seem to have enquiries into the bad starts that we have where jockeys let the horse bump the horse next to them. Use flailing arms, reins and crops in the finish. Salute in the finish, or let horses cross in front of each other in the pull up areas.
The Stipes are the 3rd parties that are to blame in this incident. Once again, my opinion. (Which every our sole has)
This is just the culmination of bad policing of existing rules.

Question to those who believe Gates had it coming. What should the sanction be in this matter for Lerena ?
