Preview: South Africa, Sunday 3.20pm BST
Clairwood: Winona Pinnacle Stakes 1,450 metres (7¼f), turf.
THE legendary Pocket Power returns to action at Clairwood on Sunday with trainer Mike Bass admitting defeat would be no disgrace against unexpectedly stiff opposition in a raceframed especially for him.
The South African champion is running for the first time since his history-making third J & B Met win at the end of January in a conditions race over an extended 7f put on at the specific request of trainer Mike Bass.
It was expected that he would meet the opposition on particularly advantageous terms but Our Giant, who takes Pocket Power on at level weights, is only 6lb inferior on official ratings.
Moreover, the Charles Laird-trained son of Giant's Causeway is a 7f specialist who normally runs in Grade 1 races and this humble SAR100,000 (£7,500) race does not even carry Listed status.
But if he is surprised by the appearance of such a tough rival, Bass insists that he is not worried about the prospect,
The Leicester-born trainer said: "Pocket Power is fine although it would be no surprise to me if Our Giant were to beat him. He is probably more forward than my horse.
"Indeed whether he wins or loses doesn't matter this time. I just want to get a run into him without having to carry a huge weight."
Bass added that this race is ideally placed because it comes three weeks before Pocket Power's next target, the Gold Challenge, which is a further three weeks from the horse's main objective, the Durban July.
He dead-heated with Dancer's Daughter in last year's Durban July.
Bass is also responsible for two of the other six runners in the Pinnacle, Bill Of Rights and African Appeal.
Mike de Kock runsthe former Tommy Stack-trained Drayton (Anthony Delpech) as well as Autumn Frost, the mount of Kevin Shea.

Greg, 2yr olds in open company in May ?? Is a good way to the poor house in my opinion. Is okay if you getting 8/1 or better... but taking short prices...{shakes head}... I reckon Sergeant Major at 8/1 represents far better value .. and that is the last leg of my Patent .... being a De Kock horse I will not brass it, but I reckon it won't win..... nor will any of the other 2 yr olds in open company over distance

Ismikle,
There have been numerous juvenile winners in open company over 1400m in the last few weeks, and often by wide margins. This one may not win,but your sweeping statement holds no credence as a rule.
