I'm sure there must be quite a few fillies around on the stud farms that went unsold at the sales - some of these fillies' racing careers would surely be available for lease until it is time to return to their relative homes to breed. All that's needed is a few phone calls?

Ra did a great job and they are pioneers in trying to get stuff done to attract new blood.

Now if you do this again next time perhaps you should target young "semi successful" executives who are just starting out. Guys who are not married yet, who like to flash around their new found cash and who like to be involved in the "next big thing".....These are the guys you want. Make them believe it is COOL to own a race horse and that people who are status driven should all be owning a race horse because people like money, money like power, power likes HORSES!!!

The guys from the Universities are a good start but they have NO disposable income, the have all the ability in the world but they will only be able to invest in race horses in about 5 to 10 years or so. I agree get them hooked now but also try and hook the REAL big fish. Guys who are already flush, guys who hang out at News Cafe with their other cool friends. Guys who already drive cars they should not be able to afford, but can due to their over inflated salaries and egos....what better way to flash those egos than with a Vodacom Durban July runner?1?!!?!?

Keep up the good work RA, you are on the right track. Next time get the boys with money through the door. They will invest NOW and save our sport.

From RA website

RA's Achievers Day a smash hit

THE Racing Association’s Achievers Day at Turffontein on Saturday was “an unbelievable success”, says RA director Peter Naidoo.

More than 600 specially invited guests – aged 18 to 35 and drawn from the professions, business and educational institutions – had a day to remember Johannesburg’s city racecourse. Nineteen of them became instant new racehorse owners in a lucky draw.

Naidoo said he’d been overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response from the young achievers, few of whom had been to the races before.

Some guests arrived at the track as early at 9am. By 11am – an hour before the first race – the Turffontein Room function venue was thronging with excited guests, and the party continued until long after the last race.

“Everyone seemed to want to know more about racing, and how to get involved. Many of them asked me to put them on a database to alert them to future feature race days. Some even asked us to have an Achievers Day once a month!”

Owners, trainers, jockeys and racing officials all commended the RA on the initiative, which was aimed at exposing young achievers to the thrills of racing – to encourage them to become racing fans and thoroughbred owners. Many seasoned racing people said the day exceeded their expectations.

Speaking on Tellytrack, RA chairman Larry Wainstein described Achievers Day as a huge success, while Tellytrack presenter Neil Pretorius enthused about it throughout the day’s transmission.

The names of 19 young guests came out of a lucky draw for membership of a syndicate to race a filly.

The horse, leased from The Alchemy stud and trained by John Vos, will have all training fees and keep sponsored. Each new member will have a 5% share in the filly’s career winnings. The 20th syndicate member will be an administrator.

The draw winners were:

Brad Burrow
Lee Scott
Lazarus Monama
Ashley Rainsford
Sizakele Nhlapo
Seipati Mosiea
Nomfundo Nobiva
Chanelle Singh
Sithole Kabelo
Kevin Smith
Melissa van Aarle
Claudette van der Schyff
Tegan Leyshon
Ross Burl
Andrew Volker
Sandra Vermaak
Michael Turner
Jonathan Barnes
Carl van der Berg

Other highlights of Achievers Day included a number of draws for free betting vouchers worth a total of R5 000 and the attendance of a number of celebrities, including several boxing champions. The Miss RA pageant and a Best-Dressed Couple competition were both well supported and had valuable prizes.

The Best-Dressed Couple was Coral Coole and Ricky West.
Miss RA was attorney Melissa Mackey, while her princesses were Gugu and Roxanne.

Achievers Day was the brainchild of the RA marketing team of Naidoo and Steve Blunden, who arranged a number of sponsorships for it.

The RA and Phumelela were the main backers of the day, while other sponsors included courier firm Overnight Logistics, brokerage Global Trader, fast-food chain Choose A Burger, Hebco Africa Waterproofing, Eric Smith, The Alchemy stud, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association, the National Horse Racing Authority.

It is hoped to make Achievers Day an annual event on the racing calendar.

You are a smooth talker Hibby, maybe we should have a few "chat up lines" under general.

when chatting up a teacher

"give me a call when you have no class"
