Fifth time lucky for Calandagan as he sweeps aside Aventure for Group 1 breakthrough

Calandagan finally made his breakthrough in Group 1 company when running out the impressive winner of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

The four-year-old's resolution had been questioned in some quarters after he chased home Jan Brueghel in the Coronation Cup at Epsom, his fourth consecutive second at Grade 1 level.

For the first time in ten years, and for the very first time as a trainer, Richard Hughes is a Group 1 winner. For his countless friends and admirers, precious few of whom will have backed  his 66-1 heroine of the July Cup , it was a moment that gladdened the heart. For the man himself,  No Half Measures's  triumph was the realisation of a dream that had endured for a decade and almost fizzled out. There was a widespread belief last year's 2,000 Guineas hero Notable Speech would cope with the drop in trip and land Europe's premier sprint. Class will out was the reason given for confidence in the favourite's claims. Class will out is just one of the reasons why Hughes has broken his Group 1 hoodoo.

Ayr heavy rain this morning but sun should by out when the meeting kicks off

Cosmic Clarets ran very green on debut but woke up late and finished his race off well The top two in the betting will be hard to beat

Nelson Gay loves the track and must be in with a big chance

Novamay nap of the meeting

Penelope’s Sister just

Beltane consistent place getter, maybe today

Glasses Up has won here often should go in again, nice price

Elemental Eye to send favourite backers home happy in the last

Murphy could ride 4 winners at Windsor this evening on some heavily backed favourites
