Iceman was the nickname of George Woolf, not Willie Shoemaker.

Morning Barry, what was the nickname of Willie Shoemaker? The "shoe" always thought it was ice related?

Shoemaker's nick name was "The Shoe." He was ice itself, both in and out of the saddle (especially playing cards for money!) and he had a dry wit that was complimented by his icy demeanor. He lived life to the fullest. Perhaps a little too full, if you get my drift.

Thought you guys needed a few more women on this forum, so wachit hey, Big Sister is here to keep an eye on youse ous. Hehhehe! don't all look so alarmed. Getting serious, I've been reading ABC Forum for a long while but only now decided to sign up. My nickname at school was Horsie, I wonder why? Can't for the life of me think. Can't ride any longer (messed up my back) so I just follow the gigis from home and go to the racetrack when I can. Also take lots of photos, my big hobby. Love following horses' racing careers, will bet occasionally but I'm not a Nissan, ie I am NOT driven.
Job: Botany in various shades and grades: teaching, research, lab work. Anything plant-related, really, just enjoy anything that's alive and growing, including horses. Never held any horse- or turf-related job though.
Likes: the Legends of the Turf series on Tellytrack was a joy and a delight to me.
Dislikes: The TT presenter reading out a loooong list of win and place payouts, swinger payouts, doubles payouts, jackpot will-payouts, ble ble bla bla, while the Grand National is getting ready to kick off (i'm exaggarating but you get my drift ... of course they wouldn't sit reading out lists of figures when a big race is about to jump at any moment).
Films: you mean those things they show on TV Channels 101-114? Oh, those, yes I watch sometimes. Can't remember any of em afterwards.
Music: Snoopy dancing on the roof of his doghouse, humming mmmm mmm mmm, that's me. Play guitar a bit, even sing a bit when no-one is there to hear.
Favourite horse/jockey/trainer: Horse: Lizard's Desire (the Underhorse from PE that showed the world, oh God I'm gutted he's dead); jockey Kevin Shea for his merry smile and so-obvious enthusiasm, trainer Mike de Kock for his courage in going abroad and his ability to rescue messed up horses like Archipenko.
I do like this Forum - it's got some interesting posts and also a friendly atmosphere unlike some others I've read where everybody seems to hate everybody else. Hope I can add something to it now and then.
