Pick 6 pools have increased sharply since couplings were dropped

Pick 6 pools have increased sharply since couplings were dropped,
confirming that many TAB horseracing players are happy with the rule
change.
In the first month without couplings (9 September to 8 October 2013), the
average pool was more than R500,000 or 45%, higher than the same period
last year.
The biggest Pick 6 pool during this timeframe was R5.7 million, as opposed
to R1.9 million in 2012, and the average payout was a phenomenal R288,141 –
a 367% increase on the same period last year.
It has been suggested that the Pick 6’s gains are at the expense of the
other popular multiple-race bets, namely the Jackpot and Place Accumulator
(PA), but turnovers show that perception is untrue.
In fact, the average Jackpot pool from 9 September to 8 October this year
increased by 35.7% to R883,988 from R651,001 in the same timeframe last
year, while PA pools have maintained last year’s levels. Couplings were
dropped from the Jackpot 18 months ago.
TAB boss Vee Moodley says the figures show a renewed interest in the Pick
6, Jackpot and PA bets by both big and small punters. The current average
investment in a Pick 6 is R116.
“An analysis of winning tickets and average bet values highlights the power
of fractional betting and that the playing field is level – big punters do
not have an advantage over small punters,” he said.
“Horseracing was lacking a dream bet and the Pick 6 without couplings is
now starting to fill that gap. Horseracing needs to compete with the sports
betting pools and the figures to date show the Pick 6 is set to fulfil that
role.”

I find it amazing that racing's authority promotes high dividends which require long-shot results which in turn require inconsistent performances. Anyway, what do I know? .......

Rapidly developing a huge dislike for this VM character (td)

the pools are getting bigger because they are getting harder to win,punting debts must be growing,you cant tell me the R6 punters are coming out of the wood work..

Racing punters will be driven away...

Yeah, rather than latching onto one months figures, perhaps they should increase their sample size and see the pool sizes regress back towards the mean......


So far so good, but I'm not yet convinced!

P6 has increased BUT has any other pool (s) taken a knock??

The pools have grown but the dividends strangely enough have not changed much, if anything the average payout has DROPPED,punters adapt to new challenges and those who are prepared to put in extra study time will benefit, betting into bigger pools will obviously be more difficult which is why the pools will be bigger in the first place and necessitate more studying and far better rewards, I think the scraping of couplings is a great move and as time goes by this will decision will be vindicated (tu) here are the stats, 1 week leading up to the change and 1 week after the change:-

Can't really follow your logic, Titch - so the pools have increased, but the div's remain more or less the same - in my book this means that on average a P6 player now spends more than before (as the pools are increasing) to win 'more or less the same' as before - not the best strategy from the punter's point of view.

From P's side of course it's great - and from an owner's point of view as well - assuming the increase in the pool is sustainable and it flows down to stakes - but as a punter (based on your stats), one now has to spend more to be able to have chance to win the same :S

The more money tied up in exotic pools the less money available for race by race churning by punters, which is i think to the operators benifit: S Or do they believe punters have more cash to play with......

My understanding or logic would be

1) I take an exotic for a grand it's a one off and difficult to catch the operator takes his cut once and I lose the bet

2) I give the punter as much info as possible quality racing with established form to make his play and as a tote actually want him to win to recycle his grand as much as possible taking my cut each time he plays, that is why I am so ante Ngong, Sweden , blind totes with no indication of fixed odds etc

Just my opinion but I don't run the tote
