If this is the case and you need to get another decoder and dish, I guess they will have to be licensed first from ICASA/Sentech to get a frequency. You just cant go broadcasting without a permit.

If they want to keep their punters happy they have no option but to get the decoder, punters like watching the races they bet on.

I don't believe that if this is the case that DSTV only recently gave them notice....they must have got notice some time ago and have been putting their ducks in a row for the eventual switch over.....it is so unbelievable how badly racing is being run.... this will surely put a dent in turnovers and keeping people in the game...:

or just say no more racing coverage - Keith Ho in Benoni has lines of people playing soccer bets and less than 10 that actually stay and watch the racing - The rest put on these multipe soccer bets and go away only to see the results next day - Racing does not have that following so any interference in the balance will start it's slide into obscurity . If this goes ahead I can imagine in a few years the punters in England saying "why do we have to watch this crap from South Africa" just like we comment about Ngong and Zim

Whether we agree or disagree with the issue speculated on in this thread ( is it even true?) we have to revert to what we know. Here are some realities as conveyed to all of us over the last few years :
For a long time Multichoice has been unhappy about the channel allocated to Tellytrack. Allegedly the viewership figures are poor. So this 'outlet' would appear to have been under threat for quite a while.
The true 'market' which the operator has identified is the R20 punter seeking the 'lottery style' bet which holds out the possibility of a life changing win off a small outlay. The development and evolution of the product offerings should have made this patently obvious over the last few years.
The majority of the punters referred to above DO NOT have Tellytrack as they cannot afford (or don't want) DSTV. Consequently this development is of little consequence to them.
The people who populate this site and who do have Tellytrack may not be as influential and important in the game as they would like to believe they are. Noisy - yes. Industry changing - possibly not.
Now - if we look at a few recent developments we may get a sense of where we are heading in the future.
The operator is now streaming overseas racing via the Saftote website. It should be possible to do exactly the same with the local racing. These pictures can be streamed into betting outlets - solving the Tellytrack issue for the R20 punter quite simply. Those of us with the necessary technology can view via this medium on a variety of devices as well. There is already separation for local and overseas so not only could they separate from Multichoice but at the same time effectively run a two or multiple channel service. The timing is good as Telkom is upgrading the lines to handle bigger capacities at higher speed.
Whether they will attempt to charge for streaming is open to debate. Only time will tell. But if everybody has to pay for streaming the subscription figures will quickly reveal whether it is sustainable or not. It should never be forgotten that we ALREADY pay as I am unaware as to how one might get Tellytrack without a DSTV bouquet of some description; which is not free.
Given the rise in sports betting viewership for participating events in those disciplines is already taken care of on DSTV from a multitude of other channels without the mind numbing background noise from Tellytrack presenters. The operator does not have to fund or provide this service!
I'm just guessing but the future may well look something like this :
Local racing - streamed
Overseas racing - streamed
Sport - On TV

I gather that we will still have dstv 239 but that will show SA racing only. It sounds like our overseas partners are not happy with the takeout by our bookmakers. To view overseas racing you will need the decoder at R3000 but 239 will still show our racing and in more detail. The top couple of 100 telebet punters are possibly going to get free decoders. This is not all cast in stone but pretty much what is happening at the moment.

Lest we all forget...or have forgotten!
Some years back, TT offered a once-off payment subscription (I forget the amount but still have the card).
After a year or two, the card stopped working!
Up to today, I am still waiting for a response / explanation from TT as to what happened!
I now have more confidence in Malema than these lying, insolent, arrogant thieves!
The first thing EFF must do is nationalise horseracing! Lol!

This is the best news I've heard in years.
If for a once off payment of R3000 I can receive the racing on a seperate decoder,I can save R693 a month by ditching my DSTV subscription.
Bar the sport, there isn't a channel worth watching on DSTV anymore, they all just spew up a load of absolute drivel.
Bring it on!
