The open bet will lose its appeal to both the punter and the bookie if the risks of a +R1m pay out is increased through bigger pools and a format that guarantees bigger winners on a more regular basis.

Strangely the operator is not willing to look at a product that will create exactly this scenario and through guaranteed payouts will also substantially increase the risk to bookmakers of more regular payouts even when we have a traditional carry over situation.

Go figure.

Yes, I meant the 0.4 tickets would not have been part of the dividend. Just 2 winning tickets then and hence the increase in payout. I am quite satisifed with the payout, just thought I would show the other side of the coin. Cost of perm was R100. Bankers were act of war and french revolution and just 2 in the last(Krambambuli and Big Ed).

Bob Brogan wrote: every R1m placed on the tote R250 000 + is robbed from the punter

there goes your value

If all the bets went onto the tote I tip there would be a significant reduction in the take out percentage. I needn't remind you that the tote is funding approx 80% of the stakes and other op costs whilst the blood sucking bookmakers only fund about 20% of the same. (I am understating the reality I think... please correct me if I am wrong) This is a massive disparity...and to exacerbate matters further the bookmakers brazenly parasitically feed of the tote's intellectual property and products. To say the least it is a colossal f... up

I'm firmly with LG on this debate...

The open bet is an anomaly that (to my knowledge) only exists here in SA. It should (have been?) be outlawed forthwith. There can be no doubt that it would benefit the game overall if it were!

One needn't look further than jurisdictions like Singapore and Hong Kong to see how effectively the sport can be run in the absolute absence of bookmakers.

I will concede that fixed price offerings are attractive and have there place so one can support these products BUT and a very big BUT the bookmakers must pay their way accordingly and desist from offering the open bet immediately. No matter how one spins it the practice is wrong. Morally and legally wrong no matter what our courts found.

This punter knew exactly what he let himself into, now he cries blue murder
He feels like an ass right now,and for three reasons
1 For playing exotics on a big day with bookies {limits}
2 For letting the whole world know he ONLY won 96K
3 For showing his mug on teletrack, for the wrong reasons

I bet he won't go back to the same outlet too soon :silly:

Louisg one thing that you are conveniently forgetting about the bookmakers is that they carry RISK with every bet that they take. This is something the tote, even with mysterious massive overseas punters and lucky numbers mambo jambo does not have to factor in. If the open bet is such a curse then why do Phumelela not attempt to do a deal with bookmakers and give them an acceptable percentage of tote bets taken on their premises? Why do Phumelela have a presence in the bookmaking arena if they value the tote so much? Lets look at both sides of the coin.

Solo..........maybe they have (although I know how efficient Kieth H is, so sure they would have their website 100% correct!).Taken from their site 10 minutes ago:

www.betxchange.co.za/termsAndConditions#tabs-3

Then go to part D............ALL LIMITS ARE POSTED THERE...........

At the end of it all , it would be ideal for all exotic bets to be in one pool . Until this happens PUNT where it SUITS your pocket !

Oh yeah... I actually forgot that HW increased their limits a few months ago.

I would also just like too add that this punter lives in the western cape however he is in Johannesburg when they having racing there the next day (as someone has already stated) he then a mentions The bookies name. As far as I am cocerned if Phumelela paid for his flight then marshals should take legal action against Phumelela
