Small breeder ask Jooste why?

Liewe Markus
Hoekom Markus, Hoekom ?

Thanks for the Translation
dear Markus
I want this letter in written in this language because it's our fight here in our own backyard, that disturbs me.
It is already bad enough reading letters from great men in the wider equestrian world - men from overseas.
I, as one of the elders, "small" breeders just want so badly a few questions answered.
I'm no threat to anyone and if this letter gets your goat, the damage that can come my way will not be so much as for a young person with a family to support.
It does not help I get on the phone and try to get you engaged in debate or conversation - I will not manage one sentence before I will be shot down by business jargon.
Markus, why are we fighting each other?
What makes you so angry that you do not care about the damage done to our fragile industry?
If you declare war against BSA, then it is your own fellow breeders you are going to shoot.
We, the breeders of this country, are the TBA and its baby BSA.
Do you not know the figures on the numbers of Breeders lost over the past decade.
Did you read the figures as a loss on this war we, the producers, to present, have absorbed?
How do you, in your own quiet time and conscience, justify it to yourself?
How do you justify your marketing organisation's total non-participation when it comes to support of research, export protocol efforts, etc.?
I said to myself a long time ago : "Oh well, we survived Hurwitz, Ross Gardiner, Sydney Press, Hilda Podlas and many others, we will probably also survive Markus Jooste. "
(For me, it's not about the personal and literal - for that I am far too old)
But now you have escalated this war to a higher level and I am anxious.
You are now bedfellows with people "that their mother would sell for a few pennies"
Why Markus, Why?

quick and crude translation sorry - but the gist is visible. Sad state of affairs and a lot of awkwardness/sadness down here with the breeders. This is not going to be a happy family affair I'm afraid. I can't understand how, for years, Equimark (Cohen) could co-exist with the TBA sales and CTS can't? I guess it is about control and power? Surely it can't be about money, as MR Jooste has open opportunity to make lots of moola elsewhere?
I agree the TBA can pull their socks up a bit with admin, but rather than steamroll them, is there not a way to be supportive - must it be compete and beat? Greed in commercialism is so ugly.

Jooste owns shares in P. It is about increasing the value of the shares?

Please someone, send him the Dale Carnegie 'How to win friends and influence people'. Is this what he wants to be remember for? A greater good for all of the industry can be achieved in a different way, other than cut-throat business practice.
The industry here is too small to divide - although big enough for an oligopoly which serves the industry as a whole. A big part of the industry is the people, is the breeders, they are not figures in a spreadsheet.
These are people who have worked, side by side, for decades. Now they are being pushed to choose which side of the fence to be on.

My views....
1)Racing is in trouble and radical change is needed.
2)I don't understand why MJ has to be the scapegoat here. CTS is made up of more than one person.
3)We have a culture of non payment in Racing. By guaranteeing the vendors their money in 31 days, CTS ushered in the new and proper dispensation in Racing.
4)When I sell the progeny of my mares, I will sell through CTS. Simple. Money guaranteed on time
5)I have often been let down by an Owner, after spending the mandate and then being told afterwards that there is " a problem " . The same happens with training fees. This culture of non or slow payment is a killer of the industry.
6 )It Is a concern for me that BSA are seen as the " Victim" now and the fact that they are miles behind Is not Important ....
7)and what is this "control" nonsense? control WHAT? Is MJ now going to buy All the horses in SA? Are CTS going to control prices? Again, How? Surely we are not all idiots, who have no limits or idea of the value of a horse?
I remain amused by the fact that the very people who call for change are the same people who attack change when it happens.
To me CTS have brought professionalism to sales and they have paid the Breeders on time. That's why they have the support from Breeders and they also know how to treat the Buyers!

Spot on Louis .....the only money that counts is money in the bank!!
The only comment I would make is, if the buyers continue not to pay, somebody is losing,so how long will the financial backers factorise, or continue to back the guarantees, if they become the victims!
( I am assuming there is backing finance here, as I would be surprised if CTS are carrying the liability)

Rob, I would rather train 20 horses and get paid for my efforts than train 50 or more horses and lose sleep worrying if I might get paid or not for the extra horses.
Also, it's very unfair on the good payers that the bad payers are tolerated. Why must the standard in the yard drop because of the bad payers ? The good payers suffer.
Why do you think that, for example, I am always very happy for Oscar, when his horses win, in spite of my not training them ? He is a very committed payer and loves his horses. Their wellbeing is always paramount to him. And the Shams also. A proper, professional yard. These are the people that we need in racing and these people who meet their commitments should not be the exception but the norm.
Cape Sales, from the outset and in principle, usher in the new dispensation of paying for purchases and on time. The directors or members of Cape Sales themselves, are exemplary payers in the Industry.
Cape Sales do not release purchases until paid for. They have registered Spelling farms and Stud Farms who will stand and care for the horses after the Sale until paid for. The buyer can choose which farm, from a long list who are contracted to Cape Sales. The horses will not be released to the purchaser by the Spelling Farm until Cape Sales clear the release. Now why couldn't BSA do the same, during the last few years ? It's very simple. It just takes some effort.

LG well said, I find it funny how MJ is being blamed for everone's short-comings or for being innovative. Does this Dr T want MJ to hold her hand and lead her into the future ? Supply and demand, when I last looked its still a free market system. Nobody is putting a gun to your head you have choices. What a load of crap !
